Mount Congreve Horticulture 5M2586 – 2024/25

This one-year course will prepare students to work in the Horticulture industry. This is the ideal starting point for a successful and fulfilling career in horticulture which covers a varied range of individual sectors and specialisms.

Students will study and be located fulltime at the newly established Mount Congreve School of Horticulture with its dedicated training facilities and classroom located in a wing of the main house. Be among the first generation of horticulturalists to study and qualify at the world-famous Mount Congreve Gardens. Undertake your training in one of the “Great Gardens of the World” and study amongst the vast botanical plant collections, four acre walled garden, Georgian glasshouses, wetlands, and beautiful woodland gardens all of which presents unique opportunity to experience a variety of microclimates and plant growing conditions.

NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the relevant knowledge, skills, and competences to carry out common horticulture operations independently under direction in a range of horticulture sectors linked to local employment opportunities.

The course covers key areas of horticultural theory alongside practical skills training while also seeking to enhance students’ professional, creative and inter-personal skills. It is an intense 48 week programme, which requires a high level of commitment, attendance and enthusiasm for horticulture and working outdoors.

Graduates will gain a broad range of knowledge of horticultural and plant care techniques working with historical plant collections. The programme will provide students with understanding of the needs of a range of plant types and horticultural contexts and provision for them in accordance with recommended best practice.

The programme has been developed to enable students acquire the relevant knowledge, skills, and competences to carry out horticulture operations independently across a core range of horticulture skills linked to employment opportunities in the Horticulture industry with local employers.
