Skills To Compete – Environmental Sustainability in the Workplace
Programme Structure
This programme is delivered through 100% face to face and classroom delivery using a virtual learning environment (VLE). If classroom delivery is not possible due to specific circumstances, tutor led online delivery may take place.
The aim of the Level 5 Award in Environmental Sustainability in the Workplace is to develop the learner’s awareness of the impacts of environmental change and the key sustainable practices that can be implemented by a business and by an individual.
This programme has been developed based on consultation with the EPA, SEAI, Irish Water, IDA, Enterprise Ireland and the Regional Skills Fora, and direct consultation with employers on their needs. In order to meet these needs learners must successfully complete the following module for this programme. For minimum award requirements, please refer to the QQI award structure for this award.
Training Facilities
The training facility must comply with:
1. all aspects of Health and Safety and Workplace standards (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work
Act 2005) and
2. all specific validation requirements as set down by the awarding body.

Level 5 Special Purpose award in Environmental Sustainability in the Workplace 5S21793
Applicants who have either successfully completed a programme leading to a Level 4 QQI qualification or can demonstrate the levels of knowledge, skills and competence associated with NFQ Level 4 will be eligible to apply for entry to this programme.

As this is a Skills to Advance funded programme, learners must be defined as an ‘employee’. Under Skills to Advance policy, ‘employees’ are defined as those who work part-time or full-time under a contract of employment, whether oral or written, express or implied, have recognised rights and duties and are in receipt of pay for their service. Self-employed persons are eligible to participate.

On successful completion of the award in Environmental Sustainability in the Workplace the learner will be able to:
1. Describe the principal effects of human activities on the environment, to include depletion of
natural resources, climate change, pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
2. Examine the key measures that have been taken to address these environmental issues, to
include: all relevant national, international and European policy instruments or agreements.
3. Identify and assess the environmental impacts of individuals and recommend actions that can
be taken to reduce these impacts.
4. Conduct an initial review to scope an environmental improvement programme that could be
carried out in the workplace.
Environmental Sustainability in the Workplace Employability Statement
The aim of this award is to develop participants awareness of the impacts of environmental change and the key sustainable practices that can be implemented by a business and by an individual. The employee will apply the skills learned to identify sustainability improvement options for the business/workplace involved.
The programme is intended for business and enterprise across all sectors of economic activity, who want their employees to acquire a general knowledge and understanding of environmental sustainability in the workplace and who further want employees to use that knowledge, competence and understanding to support sustainable practices in the workplace. Learners will be able to identify, prioritise and implement environmentally sustainable improvements in their workplace and in their own personal lives and communities. A range of units with content covering key sustainable practices are available, including:
1. climate change, other environmental pressures& global initiatives
2. energy management
3. sustainable food and food waste prevention
4. circular economy
5. environmental management& green awareness for employees
6. greening communities& greening your lifestyle.
Learners will also receive 1:1 Tutor support for 1 hour during the course
There will be approx 30 hours of self directed learning required to complete the course
