Health & Fitness Level 3 – Health Literacy
Learners participating in this Programme Module will develop knowledge and skills necessary to
make decisions about their lifestyle, including confidence in movement, understanding of elements
that contribute to health and fitness and knowledge of a range of physical activities and how to
access them.

No formal education or qualifications are required although applicants may have participated in primary and secondary education. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a standard of knowledge, skill and competence equivalent to NFQ Level 2 when accessing a Level 3 programme.

Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a limited range of knowledge, skills and competencies skills relevant to the course and be able to work under direction.

Demonstrate an understanding of the food pyramid, calorie intake, and the factors that affect calorie intake.
Identify the benefits of good eating practices in a healthy, stress free life.
Demonstrate an understanding of physical fitness, including the factors that affect fitness, its components, and the mental and physical benefits of physical activities.
Demonstrate knowledge of safety factors that must be considered when taking part in physical activities, including warming up, cooling down and stretches for major muscles.
List local leisure facilities and the activities they provide.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of stress, the common factors that cause stress, and the methods of managing stress.
Outline the effects of smoking and substance abuse on physical and mental health.
Maintain a lifestyle diary, recording food intake, physical activity and stressors.
Design a balanced meal.
Demonstrate exercises that incorporate the components of fitness.
Reflect on own personal lifestyle practices, including changes made as a result of new learning.
Demonstrate the application of communications, team working and quality awareness in a health and fitness environment.
