Skills To Compete – Sports Recreation and Exercise Traineeship
The aim of the programme is to enable the trainee to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence in a range of sports, recreation and exercise activities to work under supervision in a variety of sports related contexts and or to progress to further and or higher education and training.

Junior certificate level or equivalent minimum
Age Requirements
Applicants must have reached the statutory school leaving age.
Learning Aptitude
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Aptitude for and demonstrate keen interest in Fitness / sport activities.
The National Pool Lifeguard award requires learners to be able to (at a minimum):
– Swim 100 metres on their front and 100 metres on their back
– Surface dive and recover an object from the deepest part of a pool
– 16 years of age, or older at the time of the examination
Previous Experience
Previous sporting experience would be an advantage as would any other sport / exercise programme undertaken

Describe the requirements relevant to safety & health at work. Explain regulations to include acts
& legislation and responsibilities. Describe the roles of the authority, personal safety & health
awareness. Identify and complete documentation relating to safety & health at work. Identify of
risks and hazards in the control of infection & contamination. Describe first aid, safety & fire
awareness, manual handling, VDUs, workstations & signage. Demonstrate practical activities
relating the promotion of safety and health at work.
6- SPORTS ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY 5N4648
Describe in detail the contribution made by the bodys systems to participation in sports and
exercise.
7- LEISURE FACILITY ADMINTRATION – 5N4666
Implement effective facility administration and safe work practices working in an assistant capacity in a range of multi-purpose leisure facilities.
8- WORK PRACTICE SPORTS RECREATION AND EXERCISE – 5N1433
Work in an organisation or specific vocational context, carrying out vocationally related tasks
over a period of time, independently while under general supervision.
9- FIRST AID RESPONDER
Demonstrate the required knowledge and skills as a certified First Aid Responder
10- NATIONAL POOL LIFEGUARD
Act as a designated lifeguard, trained in pool rescue and BLS techniques. They will also be taught awareness of first aid and pool water management.
11- NATIONAL SWIM ASSISTANT TEACHER
Teach up to four pupils, under the supervision of a fully qualified Swimming Teacher.
