BSc (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to develop the required knowledge, skills and competence in Intellectual Disability Nursing in order to meet the standards set by the awarding body in the award specification for BSc (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing.

SETU, Cork Road, Waterford and Waterford College of Further Education (WCFE), part of Waterford and Wexford education and Training Board (WWETB), are proposing to offer the SETU Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing, as part of the new Unified Tertiary System. The collaboration between SETU and WWETB, where the BSc. (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing will be made available to FET learners in WCFE as part of the tertiary system, will offer tertiary learners the opportunity to partake in a 1+4 degree programme, where they will complete the first year as a pre-entry route, in Waterford College of Further Education, followed by Years 1,2, 3 and 4 of the honours degree at SETU’s Waterford campus in the Department of Nursing.

Education Requirements
· Leaving Certificate; 2H5 & 4O6/H7; English or Irish O6/H7; Mathematics O6/H7
or
· Level 4 major award
or
· Other qualifications equivalent to a major award at level 4 on the NFQ

Applications are welcome from individuals that do not meet the minimum entry requirement who are aged 23 years or over (at date of commencement of programme). Such an applicant will be assessed on their merits, taking into account their life experience, work or community experience, and recognition of prior learning.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the standard required of applicants is B2 (or equivalent) on Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Evidence of achievement of this standard is necessary for entry to the programme.

Applications must be a minimum of 17 years of age.

Applicants must demonstrate competence to undertake the programme.

Intellectual Disability nursing is seen as a speciality field of nursing that provides holistic care to persons with an intellectual disability. Intellectual disability nurses work as part of a transdisciplinary team in order to enable and empower people with intellectual disabilities to achieve their full potential.

• The Intellectual Nursing Course is delivered in a purpose-built, state-of-the-art learning
environment and students undertake clinical practice around the southeast region

• In Year 1 in WCFE you will complete the QQI Level 5 Award in Nursing Studies

• In Years 2-5 in SETU you will complete the BSc. (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing. You
will be taught over four years through a model called KSVSE (Knowledge, Science, Values and
Attitudes, Skills and Experience)

• Successfully completing all aspects of the course allows you to register as an Intellectual
Disability Nurse with An Bord Altranais
