SNA Part Time Programme

Programme Aim
During this course the learners will completed two components Special Needs Assisting and Children with Additional Needs both are QQI Level 5. There is a requirement to complete a minimum of 30 hours placement.

1. Explore the history of special needs in Ireland.
2. Examine the Legislation and Policy development relating to children with additional needs.
3. Outline a range of special needs, conditions and impairments relating to children.
4. Discuss a range of roles, responsibilities and support services available to children with
additional needs.
5. Use a range of approaches in interactions with children with Special Needs
6. Apply good practice with children with additional needs.
7. Plan developmentally appropriate activities mindful of the safety, welfare and well-being of
all children.
8. Learn to take responsibility for own learning within a multidisciplinary team, evaluating
processes which lead to co-operation and effective communication within the team.
9. Evaluate own practice to inform understanding in relation to children with special needs,
leading to an awareness of social, ethical and legal issues in relation to education and care.

Education Requirements
NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Age Requirements
Minimum statutory school leaving age (16+)


Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this programme learners will have the skills, knowledge and competencies to work independently and under supervision in a range of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) settings and or to progress to higher education and training.

The successful completion of the QQI Level 5 award in Early Childhood Care and Education will enable applicants to work independently and under supervision in a range of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) settings.
