To familiarise the learner with legislation and types of education provision for children with special educational needs in Ireland
To examine interventions and design activities for children with special educational needs (SEN)
To reflect on own attitudes, values, beliefs and assumptions in relation to working with and on behalf of children with special educational needs.
To enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

Education Requirements
NFQ Level 5 in a relevant discipline when accessing a Level 6 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 6 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Minimum statutory school leaving age (16+)


Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course and be able to exercise initiative and independence when carrying out course activities.

Reflect on own experience, attitudes, values, beliefs and assumptions in relation to providing assistance to children with special educational needs.
AS PART OF THIS MODULE THERE IS A REQUIREMENT FOR LEARNERS TO COMPLETE 30 HOURS OF WORK EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS IN A PRIMARY, POST PRIMARY OR SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOL. GARDA VETTING IS REQUIRED
