Waterford Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) delivers a variety of apprenticeships through our purpose-built facilities in both Waterford and Wexford. Our experienced staff are highly skilled and capable of supporting you on your apprenticeship journey to becoming a qualified industry professional.
Overview
An apprenticeship is a programme of structured education and training which formally combines and alternates with on-the-job employer-based training and off-the-job training in PLC Colleges, Industry training centres and regional universities.
One of the many benefits of an apprenticeship is you earn while you learn.
Currently in Ireland there are 77 statutory apprenticeships of which 25 are craft related, and more in development. Apprenticeships range in duration and entry criteria. All apprenticeships require the potential apprentice to be actively employed by an approved employer to train apprentices in the industry designation prior apprenticeship registration. Employment opportunities with an approved apprenticeship employer can be viewed on the jobs portal on www.apprenticeship.ie.

Apprentice learning supports
Our Additional Support Service for apprentices within Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) provides each individual an assessment of need and an opportunity to avail of a wide range of supports while attending Phase 2 off the job placement with us.
We will ensure that all apprentices are provided with the most appropriate supports that will allow them to fully participate and benefit from the educational opportunities provided for them. This with enhance their learning journey and ensure success. WWETB Learning and Wellbeing Supports are available to craft related apprentices with Learning requirements while attending their first off the job placement in phase 2.
Financial Supports
- Solas gender-based bursary for employers in certain apprenticeships where a single gender is underrepresented
- Female Scholarship – WWETB initiative for female apprentices who register in any one of the 25 craft apprenticeships
- Solas employer grants are available to employers engaging in certain new apprenticeship
programmes - Currently Government off the job training allowance is paid to Apprentices within anyone of the 25 craft related apprenticeships and consortium led apprenticeships the apprentice is paid by their employer


WWETB Craft Apprenticeship Female Scholarship
The craft apprenticeship female scholarship aims to encourage and support female students who wish to learn a trade in a predominantly male industry. Female students registered in a Waterford or Wexford post primary school or further education
and training centre are eligible to apply*.
Benefits of the scholarship include:
- Complete craft toolkit and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided
- Payment of college fees up to €2,000
- Appropriate textbooks supplied
- Total contribution up to €1,500 towards expenses incurred during off the job phases
Throughout your apprenticeship, apprentices will develop skills to meet the needs of your chosen industry and the national and international labour market. On successful completion of your apprenticeship your certification will range from QQI level 5 to level 10 on the National Framework of qualifications with international recognition
