Mission Statement
Our aim is to provide second chance programme of education and development to young people in a safe, supportive and holistic environment.
Formal certification process:
The centre delivers the Leaving Certification Applied course. From time to time and depending on need, a foundation year with QQI 2/3 certification may also be available. The centre also operates a Summer programme each year which is an opportunity to gain additional vocational certification e.g Safe pass, Safe Food, First Aid, Canoeing.
The Leaving Certificate Applied
The LCA is a programme overseen by the Department of Education and Science. This two year programme prepares students for transition from the centre to that of adult and working life.
The structure of the course
- The Leaving Certificate Applied is made up of a range of courses that are delivered over two years.
- Students also complete seven Student Tasks over the two years of the programme (70 credits).
- Two periods of work experience are undertaken each year.
Assessment
As learners complete their final examinations and complete their tasks and course work they collect credits. It is possible to collect a total of 200 credits. A certificate is awarded at three levels:
- Distinction (170-200 credits)
- Merit (140-169 credits)
- Pass (120-139 credits)
Students who accumulate fewer than 120 credits receive a Record of Experience.

Community Activities
Alongside the formal certification process, the centre values its links to the local community. We work alongside various organisations and agencies to enhance our students’ learning. The students completed three community art pieces in collaboration with Dungarvan Co. Council . The wall murals (see below), were commended by the Tidy Towns Committee.
To promote positive links with the community we have organised events such as the Family Photo Shoot, The Youthreach Summer Ball in aid of the Solas Centre, Car washes, Bake Sales, Hill walks and hikes, Beach cleans, fun days, coasteering and canoeing trips on the river Blackwater. Plans are already afoot to organise the Mid-Summer Awards Ball in June 2015.
EU mobility
The Youthreach programme aims to raise awareness of our European identity. By working with our National agency LEARGAS we have availed of the following
In October 2014 three students joined 25 other young people from Greece, Romania, Cyprus and Estonia to participate in a training course on EU citizenship cross in Limassol Cyprus. This was a highly valuable learning experience. All participants were awarded their EU YOUTHPASS certificates.
In May 2014 Co-ordinator Maria Carney participated in a study visit on vocational education for young people in Malta.
Italian is our students European language of choice and we will engage in further European activities to enhance the language and communication skills.
Whole Centre Inspection by the Department of Education & Science
In March 2014 the centre was inspected by the Department of Education. The findings commended the staff and students and many good practices were identified. The report can be found on the Department of Education website:
