EY Special Needs Assisting L6 (Evening)
This module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the theory and
practice underpinning care of those who present with special educational needs to enable the learner
to assist in the provision of this care.
8. Objectives of the Module
• To familiarise the learner with legislation and types of education provision for children with
special educational needs in Ireland
• To examine interventions and design activities for children with special educational needs (SEN)
• To reflect on own attitudes, values, beliefs and assumptions in relation to working with and on
behalf of children with special educational needs.
• To enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

Start Date: 26-08-2026 Hours/week: 03 Hrs 00 Mins Duration: 22 weeks
NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

3. Investigate a range of approaches utilised assisting
emotional regulation and behavioural supports for children with
special educational needs in educational settings.
4. Examine strategies for dealing with stressors within the
workplace environment.
5. Reflect on own experience, attitudes, values, beliefs and
assumptions in relation to providing assistance to children with
special educational needs.
