Sustainable Furniture Upcycling

The Sustainable Furniture Upcycling is a new part-time programme that offers a fun and practical approach to transforming pre-loved furniture through hands-on learning with an emphasis on sustainability.

This one day a week course is suitable for both beginners and those with previous upcycling experience. The learner will explore contemporary and traditional paint techniques, interior design styles and decorative finishes. Participants will learn how to plan a design; prepare furniture correctly; choose suitable pieces to upcycle and develop the skills needed to give old furniture a fresh new look using sustainable methods and practical techniques.

Education Requirements
NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Age Requirements
Minimum statutory school leaving age (16+)


Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

By the end of the course participants will understand how to design; prepare; paint; finish and creatively transform furniture pieces with confidence.
QQI Accreditation is offered in Level 5 Combined Materials and Design Skills. Both modules are component modules for the QQI Level 5 Interior Design 5M5054 Award.
