Dressmaking Skills (Advanced)

The aim of this one day practical dressmaking course is to teach learners the skills to follow patterns and to make a variety of garments which can include a dress; a blouse; a trousers; a skirt or coat, from start to finish.

You will learn how to upcycle and customise clothes creating unique and original design in a cost – effective manner.
QQI Level 5 Accreditation is available in Pattern Drafting and Garment Construction. Both modules are component award for the QQI Level 5 Award in Fashion Design.

Education Requirements
NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

At the end of this course, you will:
Developed the practical skills required to construct a well finished garment and gain confidence in using sewing equipment and dressmaking techniques.
Develop the knowledge and understanding of the steps and process involved in garment construction.
Interpret and use Patterns.
Gain an understanding of different sewing techniques for different fabrics.
Demonstrate a range of appropriate and relevant garment construction and finishing techniques.
Use a range of cutting, sewing and pressing skills and tools.
Understand and use the tools, materials and processed used to draft a range of basic blocks.
Develop drafting techniques to produce simple patterns.
Be able to produce a toile and sewing samples prior to the construction of a garment.
This is an ideal portfolio course who wish to progress to QQI Level 6 Fashion Design; Limerick College of Art & Design and the National College of Art & Design.
Applicants should have a B2 Level of English.
