Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new special purpose programme designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and competencies in the rapidly evolving area of artificial intelligence (AI).
Learners will gain an understanding of AI concepts, practical applications and ethical considerations, and have opportunities to enhance their problem-solving abilities.

Introduction to Artificial Intelligence is offered as a module in the Part-time Information Technology & Digital Skills programme. The other modules are Level 4 Desktop Publishing; Data Entry; Web Design and Information Technology Skills.
This course is designed to support adult learners in taking the next step in their education journey. It helps build the skills and confidence needed to progress to further study at QQI Level 4 and Level 5 across a wide range of subject areas available at Durands Court, FET Centre. Whether you wish to develop new skills; explore different career paths, to continue your education, this course provides a strong foundation for future learning opportunities.

Education Requirements
The programme is positioned at Level 4 on the NFQ. Applicants seeking entry must have achieved a minimum of a NFQ Level 3 Major Award or its equivalent prior to entry to the programme, or have achieved the relevant skills, knowledge, and competence through work experience. Learners within this category are assessed prior to enrolment to ensure they meet the required skills to undertake the programme.

Age Requirements
Applicants must have reached the current statutory school leaving age.


Learning Aptitude
The programme is aimed at learners of all backgrounds who wish to develop their knowledge of AI: what it is, how it works, how it is used in various real-world contexts, and its implications on society.
Applicants seeking entry to the programme must have achieved a minimum of an NFQ Level 3 Major Award or its equivalent, or have achieved the relevant skills, knowledge, and competence through previous work experience, which may be verified at interview stage or via the ETB’s RPL process. Basic numeracy and digital literacy (including computer and internet familiarity) are desirable on entry to the programme and will be evaluated at interview stage.


Previous Experience
Applicants who have either successfully completed a programme leading to a Level 3 QQI qualification or can demonstrate the levels of knowledge, skills and competence associated with NFQ Level 3 will be eligible to apply for entry to this programme.

The Learners will need need the motivation to learn, have an interest in the area and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies within the programme.

On successful completion of the award in Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, the learner will be able to:
1. Explain the evolution of AI, including key concepts, terminology, ethical uses, societal impact, and real-world applications.
2. Outline how data can be collected and used in AI applications.
3. Use a variety of AI applications to tackle real-world problems.

The programme is aimed at learners of all backgrounds who wish to develop their knowledge of AI: what it is, how it works, how it is used in various real-world contexts, and its implications on society.

Introduction to AI is offered as a component of Information Technology & Digital Skills offered under the BTEI programme.
