Objectives of the Programme Module
To provide the learner with the knowledge of the major factors affecting soil suitability for fruit
production
To provide the learner with the skills for preparing, growing, establishing and harvesting fruit.
To provide the learner with mechanisms to deal with common pests, diseases and weed identification and control.
To enable the learner to observe the correct safety procedures when using relevant equipment/work practices in order to create and maintain a safe working environment.
To assist the learner to develop the language, literacy and numeracy skills related to Growing
Vegetables through the medium of the module themes and content
To enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning

Start Date: 26-08-2026 Hours/week: 04 Hrs 15 Mins Duration: 6 weeks
Applicants should have a standard of knowledge, skill and competence equivalent to NFQ Level 3 when accessing a Level 4 programme. Applicants may have participated in primary and secondary education although no formal qualifications are required.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

1. State the major factors affecting soil suitability for fruit production to include soil
composition, nutrient availability, water holding capacity, drainage, organic matter content
and compaction
2. Prepare ground for fruit growing to include digging, breaking up of soil, removal of debris,
weeds and large stones to form suitable surface
3. Plant a range of fruit plants to include bare-root and containerised tree fruit, bush, cane and
soft fruit
4. Apply compost, manure and fertiliser to a stated rate at planting and throughout the growing
season
5. Deal with common pests and diseases of fruit crops to include identification and control by a
range of methods
6. Deal with weeds to include identification and control by a range of methods
7. Maintain growing fruit crops to include watering, weather and pest protection, pruning,
training and supporting
8. Harvest a range of fruit to include selection, grading and packing
9. Operate within appropriate safety procedures to create and maintain a safe working
environment including safety standards regarding lifting, carrying and handling plants, tools
and equipment
