What is Garda Vetting?

Garda vetting is a background check completed by the National Vetting Bureau and is an important safeguard in protecting the safety and welfare of children and vulnerable adults.

The Garda vetting procedure is set down in the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 to 2016 (‘the Acts’) and is operated by The National Vetting Bureau (‘NVB’) of An Garda Síochána.

Garda Vetting undertaken by the Bureau provides a vetting disclosure outlining the particulars of a criminal record (if any) relating to the person being vetted.

It may also provide a statement of specified information (if any) which the Chief Bureau Officer of the Bureau has determined should be disclosed.

5 Step Process of Garda Vetting

The applicant will be contacted, and issued with a Vetting Invitation form(s) by the WWETB liaison person or relevant course coordinator in the case of students/learners.

  • Application Initiated

The Applicant’s Vetting Invitation will then be checked and submitted via the E-Vetting system to the National Vetting Bureau. The Invitation will, in turn, generate a Password/Link which is          sent automatically to the applicant’s e-mail address by the National Vetting Bureau. Each applicant will be obliged to furnish a valid e-mail address for the purpose of obtaining the                         necessary Link from the Vetting Bureau which will enable the applicant to submit his/her online Vetting application. The Applicant has a maximum of 30 days from receipt of the                             Password/Link in which he/she can submit their online vetting application.

  • Application submission

If an Applicant does not use the Password/Link provided to him/her by the National Vetting Bureau within the 30-day limit then the timeframe will be deemed to have expired and the applicant will need to go through the entire Invite process again.

  • Timeframe

If an Applicant does not use the Password/Link provided to him/her by the National Vetting Bureau within the 30-day limit then the timeframe will be deemed to have expired and the applicant will need to go through the entire Invite process again.

  • Tracking

Applicants can track their application online to see its progress by logging on to the NVB Website and choosing the E-Vetting Tab →Track Application.

  • Disclosure

When the process has been fully-completed at National Vetting Bureau level a Disclosure in the name of the applicant will be forwarded to the WWETB via the E-Vetting Portal. WWETB will then notify the Applicant of the outcome of his/her vetting
