Objectives of the Programme Module
 To encourage an awareness and appreciation of design in society and within a wider
historical and cultural context.
 To enable the learner to develop an understanding of the design process so that the
learner may exercise its application in seeking design solutions, both as an individual and
as part of a team.
 To explore with the learner the effective communication of design ideas within
appropriate methods.
 To facilitate the Learner to develop the skills to use a range of materials, technologies and
processes appropriate to a specified design area.
 To assist the learner to develop the language, literacy and numeracy skills related to
Design through the medium of the module themes and content
 To enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

Education Requirements
Applicants should have a standard of knowledge, skill and competence equivalent to NFQ Level 3 when accessing a Level 4 programme. Applicants may have participated in primary and secondary education although no formal qualifications are required.

Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.


Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work under direction with some ability to work on their own initiative.

Learning Outcomes of Level 4 Design 4N1139
Learners will be able to:
1. Identify the main historical events and developments that have shaped modern design in a
particular craft or design field.
2. Describe some functions of design in everyday life, to include both practical and aesthetic
examples.
3. Explain how a full working design is produced, to include the function of the initial brief, how
ideas are created, and the skills needed to produce a finished piece.
4. Contribute to the interpretation of a design brief, to include research on creative sources
and development of outline ideas.
5. Demonstrate problem solving skills while working as a member of a design team.
6. Participate in decision-making on design materials, processes and technologies for a
particular product or artefact.
7. Demonstrate design skills, to include use of a range of materials, processes and
technologies.
8. Participate in the production of full working designs and finished pieces.
