EY Palliative Care
Module Aim:
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the
knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to care for and
address the needs of a person and their family after the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, in a dignified, inclusive and holistic manner.

Start Date: 23-09-2024 Hours/week: 04 Hrs 00 Mins Duration: 12 weeks
NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme.
CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English
Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway

Age Requirements
Minimum statutory school leaving age (16+)
Learning Aptitude
Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

Learners will be able to:
1. Discuss the philosophy and principles of palliative care
2. Summarise the structure and organisation of palliative care services to include the role played by the
multi-disciplinary team and diverse family structures in the provision of care for a terminally ill person
3. Discuss the role of the support worker in the promotion of key issues such as life quality, self-esteem,
respect, privacy and dignity in palliative care work
4. Explore different attitudes to death and dying to include an understanding of individual patterns of
grief, bereavement and loss
5. Employ a range of communication strategies and processes which are central to the work in palliative
care
6. Apply a person-centred approach to caring for a person in the last days of their life to include the
provision of supportive and holistic care promoting safety, dignity, respect and comfort
7. Respond appropriately to the needs of the person who is confused in the last days of life
8. Work effectively and with great sensitivity in relation to the dying person and their significant others
in a palliative care setting
9. Use the range of skills required from a palliative support worker in relation to end of life care.
This module is aimed at those who have completed QQI L5 Healthcare Support / Service Skills or have completed more than 50% of the course. This programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge and skills required to care for a person diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and their family in a dignified, inclusive and holistic manner.
