In May, Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board, in partnership with Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) National Office, hosted a special performance of Word Against the Word by Keith Dunphy, in St Michael’s Theatre New Ross, for educators and community partners from across the South East.
The audience included educators and practitioners from WWETB, KCETB, KWETB and Regional Adult Literacy Coalition partner organisations. Together, they experienced a powerful and thought-provoking performance exploring dyslexia, literacy and the impact that difficulties with reading and writing can have on people’s lives.
Following the performance, participants took part in an engaging Q&A session with Keith Dunphy. The discussion provided an opportunity to reflect on the themes of the play, hear about Keith’s experiences, and consider how greater understanding of literacy challenges can support more inclusive educational practice.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the performance as moving, insightful and impactful. The event highlighted the value of lived experience in helping educators better understand the barriers that learners with literacy difficulties can face.
Reflecting on the performance Liz Duffy, WWETB’s AEO for Language and Literacy commented on how well the play was received on the night, how it highlighted how somebody can struggle but also how they can excel. Liz also commented on how one significant person (and Keith had many) can have such impact on a person’s life. She referred to Keith’s own determination, his believe in the arts and how everybody should be given the opportunity to benefit from the arts.
A sincere thank you to Keith Dunphy, Adult Literacy for Life National Office, and everyone who attended and contributed to this memorable event. Special thanks to Edel Finan, WWETB Regional Literacy Coordinator, whose initiative and leadership helped bring this unique learning opportunity to educators and literacy partners across the region.
